Maryland Lawmaker Wants LTA, DStv Hauled Before House Over Poor Network, Lack of Liberian Content

MONROVIA, Liberia – Maryland County District #2 Representative Anthony Williams has called on the House of Representatives to summon officials of the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) over persistent poor telecommunications services affecting Maryland County and other parts of southeastern Liberia.

Speaking Tuesday during the 17th Sitting of the Second Quarter of the Third Session of the 55th Legislature, Williams said unreliable network connectivity continues to deny citizens access to communication and information services. He argued that although the issue has been repeatedly raised on the floor of the House, lawmakers have failed to take concrete action by inviting the relevant authorities to account for the situation.

The Maryland lawmaker said the continued lack of legislative intervention has left residents in several counties without reliable telecommunications services, stressing that there has been no meaningful feedback from institutions responsible for regulating the country’s telecommunications sector. He urged plenary to invite the LTA to explain the challenges and present measures to improve network coverage nationwide.

Williams also criticized DStv, accusing the satellite television provider of failing to extend its services to all parts of Liberia. He further argued that despite operating in the country, the company has not established a dedicated channel for Liberian content, saying local programming continues to receive limited attention compared to content from other countries. He urged the Legislature to summon both the LTA and DStv to address lawmakers on their operations and commitments to Liberian consumers.
