South Africa Debuts Iris: The First AI-Powered Robot Tutor Transforming Education

Durban, August 2025 — In a landmark moment for African innovation, South Africa unveiled Iris, its first AI-powered teaching robot, designed to transform classroom learning and tackle long-standing educational inequities across the nation.
A Homegrown Innovation with Broad Reach
Introduced by Deputy Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Nomalungelo Gina, during a launch event in Durban, Iris is the brainchild of Thando Gumede—a former educator and founder of BSG Technologies. Developed in KwaZulu‑Natal, the robot reflects a uniquely African response to the challenges of education access.
The robot stands out for its multilingual capabilities, able to teach all subjects—from early childhood (Grade R) to tertiary level—in all 11 of South Africa’s official languages. It leverages natural language processing, emotional recognition, and adaptive learning to provide individualized instruction that responds to each student’s pace and needs
Innovation Rooted in Purpose
Though inspired by the possibilities of AI, Iris was conceived from real challenges in the classroom. Gumede, speaking at the unveiling, recalled her time teaching math and science in rural schools, where teaching materials were scarce, and classrooms overcrowded. Her goal: to empower learners and support educators, not replace them
IRIS does not belong to me. It belongs to every one of us in South Africa…” she said, underscoring the importance of collaboration and shared ownership for the technology’s widespread adoption.
Government officials emphasized that Iris would act as a classroom companion, enriching instruction and bridging resource gaps—especially in rural and underserved communities.
Investing in Equity and Inclusion
Deputy Minister Gina celebrated Iris not just as a technical milestone, but a symbol of progress toward a more inclusive digital future—particularly resonant during South Africa’s Women’s Month.
“We must be the architects of our own digital future… Women must lead in shaping the future of science, innovation, and fields like AI.”
Echoing this message, the Department of Basic Education reaffirmed that teachers would play a central role, equipped and upskilled to integrate AI tools into teaching.
The Road Ahead
A live demonstration at the launch event allowed students to interact with Iris, which solved complex questions and offered real-time feedback—generating excitement among learners and educators alike.
