Monrovia, Liberia — The National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL) has welcomed the commencement of the Sunfish 3D seismic reprocessing project by global geoscience company TGS, describing it as a significant step toward strengthening Liberia’s offshore oil and gas exploration potential.
The project, which covers approximately 6,100 square kilometers in the Harper Basin, is expected to enhance subsurface understanding of Liberia’s offshore geology through the application of advanced seismic imaging technology.
In a statement posted on its official social media platform, NOCAL disclosed that the reprocessing effort will employ advanced 3D Kirchhoff Pre-Stack Depth Migration workflows designed to generate clearer and more accurate images of Upper Cretaceous prospects, while preserving critical Amplitude Versus Offset (AVO) responses.

According to NOCAL, the improved data quality will enable investors and exploration companies to conduct more confident reservoir assessments and identify new exploration opportunities within Liberia’s offshore basin.
The Sunfish 3D seismic reprocessing project is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2026 and forms part of a broader collaboration between NOCAL and TGS aimed at modernizing and upgrading Liberia’s national seismic data library.
Upon completion, all existing offshore 2D and 3D seismic data covering more than 50,000 kilometers of 2D data and over 31,000 square kilometers of 3D data will have been reprocessed using state-of-the-art technology, significantly improving the country’s data readiness.
NOCAL has described the initiative as a major milestone in positioning Liberia as a competitive and attractive destination for offshore petroleum exploration and investment.
The corporation noted that the project underscores the government’s commitment to building a transparent, modern, and investor-friendly petroleum sector capable of driving sustainable economic growth.
