Monrovia, Liberia — The Government of Liberia has disclosed details of a proposed US$45 million supplementary budget, outlining key spending priorities across critical sectors, with major allocations directed toward health, education, and public administration.
According to budget breakdowns, the largest share US$11.4 million has been earmarked for public administration, followed closely by US$10.9 million for the health sector, signaling a strong focus on governance and service delivery.
The education sector is set to receive US$7.3 million, while US$7.16 million has been allocated to infrastructure and basic services, reflecting ongoing efforts to improve public facilities and national development.
In the security sector, the National Security Agency (NSA) is expected to receive US$2.5 million, while the Ministry of Justice has been allotted US$1.5 million to strengthen border response mechanisms. Additionally, US$600,000 has been designated for the Ministry of National Defense to support recruitment and the procurement of essential equipment.
The agriculture sector, a key driver of livelihoods for many Liberians, is allocated US$500,000 an amount some analysts say may raise questions about the government’s prioritization of food security and rural development.
Funding Sources Identified
Authorities disclosed that the US$45 million envelope will be financed primarily through external and domestic sources. Of the total amount, US$40 million is expected to come from undisbursed World Bank budget support initially earmarked for 2025, while the remaining US$5 million represents projected domestic revenue over-performance for the same fiscal period.
Public Interest and Scrutiny Expected
The proposed supplementary budget is likely to attract public scrutiny, particularly regarding the balance of allocations across sectors and the relatively modest funding directed toward agriculture.
As the Legislature prepares to review the proposal, stakeholders are expected to closely examine whether the spending plan aligns with the country’s most urgent development needs, including healthcare delivery, education access, infrastructure expansion, and national security.
The outcome of the legislative debate will determine how quickly the funds are deployed and whether the allocations translate into tangible improvements for citizens across the country.
