Gbarnga City is currently buzzing with excitement as it hosts one of the biggest student sporting events in recent times — the “Who Owns Gbarnga Through Sports” Tournament, sponsored by Bong County Electoral District #2 Representative, Hon. James M. Kolleh.
The tournament, which kicked off on March 13 at the David Kuyoun Sports Stadium, has brought together 22 semi and full senior high schools competing at both the stadium and the Catholic Similarn Field in Gbarnga.
As the competition progresses, several schools have advanced to the next stage, while the event continues to attract large crowds of students, sports fans, and residents from across Bong County. Match days are filled with excitement, with over a thousand spectators turning out to support their teams.
The initiative goes beyond competition by promoting youth development and talent growth through sports. Outstanding players are rewarded after each match, with the Man of the Match and Queen of the Match receiving prizes including a Spark 40 Pro smartphone, a headset, and a book bag.
Organizers have also introduced an electronic substitution board, adding a modern and professional touch rarely seen in local school tournaments.
To support participation, each school received two sets of jerseys and L$10,000, helping teams prepare adequately for the competition.
