President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. is facing mounting criticism following reports of a $10 million construction project underway in his hometown of Foya, Lofa County. While the government has yet to clarify the exact purpose of the development, speculation has fueled heated public debate across the country.

Some sources claim the project is a presidential villa intended to serve the Mano River Union (MRU), while others argue it is a private estate allegedly financed with public funds. The conflicting reports have left citizens demanding answers.

Critics are particularly angered by the timing of the project, pointing to the deteriorating state of national institutions such as the University of Liberia, public hospitals, and schools. “Why spend $10 million on luxury when our children sit on broken chairs at the University?” questioned student activist Emmanuel Kpadeh.

Others, however, see the project as an opportunity for regional growth. “If Lofa is developed, Liberia benefits. We should not dismiss every investment as wasteful,” said local businessman Amos Kamara.

The controversy has also stirred broader concerns about governance. Many Liberians are asking whether, after more than four decades in public service, President Boakai is prioritizing prestige over pressing national needs.

As the debate grows, the administration has yet to issue a detailed statement on the project’s purpose, funding source, and long-term impact. For now, citizens remain sharply divided between those who see development and those who see misplaced priorities.
