12 Charged Over Brutal Public Assault and Stripping of Woman at Red-Light

The Liberia National Police (LNP) has charged and forwarded to court 12 individuals accused of participating in the violent public assault and stripping of a woman at the busy Red-Light commercial district last week.

According to police authorities, the suspects allegedly attacked the Liberian woman, stripped her naked in public, and accused her of dressing “indecently” or “immodestly.”

The disturbing incident, which was captured on video and circulated widely across social media platforms, triggered nationwide outrage and renewed concerns over mob violence and the protection of women’s rights in Liberia.

Police say the accused individuals have been formally charged and transferred to the Monrovia City Court at the Temple of Justice, where they are expected to face prosecution as investigations continue.

The shocking footage showed the woman being publicly humiliated by a group of men in broad daylight, sparking strong condemnation from citizens, civil society organizations, and women’s advocacy groups.

Many Liberians described the attack as barbaric, unlawful, and a gross violation of human dignity.

The Liberia National Police, in a statement, condemned the act and assured the public of its commitment to ensuring that all individuals connected to the incident are held accountable under the law.

The case has since reignited public debate about gender-based violence, mob justice, and societal attitudes toward women in Liberia.

Rights advocates are calling for swift prosecution of the accused and stronger measures to protect women from public abuse and harassment.

Authorities have meanwhile urged the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands, emphasizing that grievances must be addressed through lawful and peaceful means.

Further hearings into the matter are expected at the Monrovia City Court in the coming days.
