Unity Party Youth League Expresses Frustration Over Slow Pace of US$19 Million Drug Investigation, Calls for Dismissal of Any Officials Found Implicated
The Unity Party Youth League expresses its deep frustration and disappointment over what it describes as the slow pace of the government’s investigation into the reported US$19 million drug case.
As young people who stood firmly behind the Rescue Mission Agenda and campaigned tirelessly for the election of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, we expected a government that would demonstrate zero tolerance for drug trafficking and every form of organized crime. We therefore find it deeply troubling that, despite the seriousness of this matter, the investigation appears to be moving at a pace that has left many Liberians questioning whether justice will ultimately be served.
The Youth League believes the prolonged nature of the investigation has created uncertainty and fueled public concern. We urge the relevant law enforcement and judicial institutions to conduct a thorough, impartial, transparent, and timely investigation and ensure that anyone found responsible—regardless of status, office, or political affiliation—is held accountable under the laws of Liberia.
We further call on President Joseph Nyuma Boakai to immediately dismiss any government official who is found, through due legal process and credible investigation, to have been involved in or facilitated this drug case. There must be no protection for public officials who betray the trust of the Liberian people. The fight against drugs cannot succeed if those entrusted with public office are shielded from accountability.
Illegal drugs continue to destroy communities across Liberia. They rob young people of their future, fuel addiction, contribute to violent crime, undermine families, and weaken the country’s social and economic development. Every shipment of dangerous drugs that enters our country threatens the health, safety, and aspirations of an entire generation. The government must therefore demonstrate through decisive action that protecting Liberia’s youth is a national priority and that there will be no safe haven for drug traffickers or their collaborators.
We strongly condemn drug trafficking and believe there should be absolutely no room in government or society for anyone involved in the illegal drug trade. Mr. President, the Liberian people are looking to your leadership at this critical moment. We urge you to act decisively and reassure the nation that your administration remains committed to the principles of accountability and the rule of law.
Should the government fail to demonstrate meaningful progress in ensuring accountability and restoring public confidence, the Unity Party Youth League reserves its constitutional right to organize peaceful and lawful public demonstrations to show that the youth of this party stand firmly against drug trafficking and in defense of Liberia’s future.
We remind President Joseph Nyuma Boakai that thousands of young people sacrificed their time and energy to support the Rescue Mission because they believed in promises of accountability, transparency, and equal justice. Those promises must now be reflected through bold and decisive action.
The Unity Party Youth League therefore calls on the President and his administration to restore public confidence by ensuring that this investigation is pursued diligently, independently, and without fear or favor. Liberia’s youth deserve a future free from the scourge of illegal drugs, and the nation deserves a justice system that holds every offender accountable, regardless of position or influence.
The future of Liberia depends on the choices made today. We remain committed to supporting every lawful effort that strengthens accountability, protects our young people from the devastating effects of illegal drugs, and upholds the rule of law.
