UL President Denies Planned Fee Hike Amid Public Concerns
The President of the University of Liberia, Dr. Layli Maparyan, has dismissed widespread reports suggesting that the state-run institution is preparing to increase student fees for the upcoming semester, describing the claims as misleading and fueled by social media sensationalism.
Dr. Maparyan clarified that she neither announced nor authorized any immediate increment in tuition or other student-related fees. According to her, recent remarks attributed to her were taken out of context and misrepresented online.
Speaking on the issue, the UL President explained that her comments were centered on the growing financial pressures confronting higher education institutions, particularly the rising operational costs and the widening gap between the university’s expenditures and the revenue generated from student fees.
She noted that the discussion was intended to highlight the imbalance between the university’s current income and the cost of maintaining services provided to students, not to signal an impending fee increase.
Dr. Maparyan emphasized that no decision has been made regarding any adjustment in fees for the next academic semester.
She also warned against what she termed a growing trend of misinformation and selective interpretation on digital platforms, where partial statements are often circulated without proper context.
According to her, such distortions undermine constructive dialogue about the real challenges facing the university, including sustaining academic standards, improving infrastructure, and managing the institution’s operational demands.
While acknowledging the rapid spread of information through social media, Dr. Maparyan urged the public and students to rely on verified information and avoid speculation.
She reaffirmed that there are currently no plans to increase student fees for the next semester.
