The Embassy of Liberia in Abuja has lodged a formal diplomatic complaint with Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs over recent public remarks made by Nigerian cleric Elijah Babatunde Ayodele concerning Liberia’s political leadership.

In a communication dated June 8, the Embassy warned that the statements, which referenced President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, were capable of distorting public perception and straining the long-standing cordial relations between Liberia and Nigeria.

Liberian diplomatic officials further cautioned that the remarks have already triggered concern among citizens both at home and in the diaspora, with the potential to undermine public confidence, national cohesion, and democratic stability.

The Embassy also recalled the cleric’s previous engagements and pronouncements during Liberia’s 2023 electoral period, noting a pattern of commentary on Liberian political affairs that it views as sensitive and potentially destabilizing.

Against this backdrop, the Embassy urged Nigerian authorities to urgently take note of the matter and engage relevant institutions for appropriate review and action, in the interest of mutual respect, regional stability, and diplomatic decorum.
