Senator Prince Kermue Moye Sr. Honored for Securing Historic Funding for Public Defenders

MONROVIA, Liberia – Bong County Senator Prince Kermue Moye Sr. has been honored by the National Association of Public Defenders of Liberia for his instrumental role in securing a historic US$200,000 budget allocation for the Association in the 2026 Supplementary Budget.
During a recognition ceremony held Thursday at the Capitol Building, the Association’s President, Cllr. Bestman Juah, described the appropriation as the first direct budgetary allocation to the Public Defenders Program since its establishment. He credited Senator Moye’s strong advocacy and commitment for making the funding possible.
Receiving the honor, Senator Moye expressed surprise at the recognition, stating that supporting public defenders is part of the Legislature’s responsibility to strengthen Liberia’s justice system. He noted that while the US$200,000 allocation is a historic achievement, it is still not enough to meet the growing demands of public defenders across the country.
The Bong County lawmaker also pledged to continue advocating for increased funding in future national budgets to ensure public defenders have the resources needed to effectively serve indigent defendants.
The newly approved funding is expected to improve legal representation for citizens who cannot afford private lawyers, expand public defense services throughout Liberia, and help reduce case backlogs and prolonged pretrial detention.
