Rep. Musa Bility Demands Full Disclosure on US$19.2M Drug Bust-Warns Liberia’s Future at Risk if Masterminds Remain Untouched
MONROVIA – Nimba County District #7 Representative Musa Hassan Bility has called for a full disclosure of information surrounding the recent US$19.2 million drug seizure at the Roberts International Airport (RIA), warning that Liberia’s future remains under serious threat if authorities fail to identify and prosecute those behind the trafficking operation.
Speaking during legislative deliberations on the matter, Rep. Bility expressed frustration that while individuals accused of handling narcotics have been arrested and prosecuted, the alleged suppliers and organizers of the operation remain at large.
“Today, I have my son in jail. He did not import drugs here, and he has no capacity to export drugs. He’s in jail because he handled it. So, we said he should face the consequences,” Bility said. “But the people who supplied our children and streets are going free. Not a single person has been arrested.”
The lawmaker argued that the movement of such a large quantity of narcotics could not have occurred without the involvement, negligence, or knowledge of several individuals and institutions responsible for cargo handling and security oversight.
“Cargo preparation involves so many people. To keep that information secret is a disservice to this country,” he stated. “The LDEA must be made to come here and provide full details to this House as to who’s behind this drug movement. The future of our country will remain in complete danger if we don’t find out who is behind this drug movement.”
Rep. Bility further warned that Liberia risks gaining an international reputation as a transit hub for narcotics if authorities fail to take decisive action against those orchestrating the illicit trade.
Referring to reports that the shipment was destined for Europe, he noted that continued trafficking activities through Liberia could damage the country’s international standing and expose it to heightened scrutiny from foreign governments and law enforcement agencies.
The Nimba lawmaker challenged the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), Customs authorities, and other security institutions to provide a comprehensive account of the circumstances surrounding the seizure and identify all individuals connected to the operation.
He also called for a thorough investigation into activities at the country’s ports and entry points, urging that officials of the National Port Authority (NPA), maritime security agencies, and other relevant institutions be subjected to scrutiny.
Invoking the constitutional oversight responsibility of the House of Representatives, Bility emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the fight against narcotics trafficking.
According to him, uncovering the network behind the multimillion-dollar drug shipment is critical not only to securing convictions but also to protecting Liberia’s sovereignty, safeguarding its youth, and preventing the country from becoming a safe corridor for international drug syndicates.
The call comes in the wake of one of Liberia’s largest drug seizures in recent years, a case that has intensified public demands for accountability and a deeper investigation into the criminal networks operating behind the scenes.
