President Boakai Calls For Calm As Border Tensions With Guinea Ease

Monrovia, Liberia – March 21, 2026 — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has assured Liberians that the government is firmly in control of the situation along the Liberia–Guinea border, emphasizing that peace, diplomacy, and national security remain top priorities amid recent tensions in Lofa County.
In a nationwide address delivered from the Executive Mansion on Wednesday, the President said recent developments in the Sorlumba area of Foyah District sparked concern among citizens, particularly those in border communities. However, he reassured the nation that swift diplomatic engagements have helped to de-escalate the situation.
“As President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Liberia, it is my duty to keep the Liberian people informed and to assure you that the peace and security of our nation remain my top priorities,” Boakai stated.
According to the President, the Government of Liberia immediately engaged Guinean authorities through diplomatic channels, while also collaborating with Sierra Leone under the framework of the Mano River Union to ensure a peaceful resolution.
These high-level engagements, he noted, have yielded positive results, with all parties reaffirming their commitment to maintaining peace and stability along their shared borders. He disclosed that the Government of Guinea has already instructed its forces to withdraw to previous positions a move he described as a “critical step” toward restoring calm.
Despite the progress, President Boakai said Liberian security forces, including the Armed Forces of Liberia and the Liberia National Police, remain on high alert, working in coordination with local authorities to maintain order and reassure affected communities.
The President also acknowledged the role of regional and international partners, including ECOWAS and the African Union, whose calls for restraint and dialogue have reinforced Liberia’s diplomatic approach.
“Our pursuit of peace is not a sign of weakness, but a demonstration of strength,” Boakai emphasized. “Liberia will continue to rely on dialogue, cooperation, and regional mechanisms to resolve this matter responsibly.”
He used the occasion to caution citizens against spreading misinformation, urging especially those in border areas to remain calm, law-abiding, and supportive of ongoing efforts by the government and security agencies.
“Let us not allow fear or rumors to undermine the peace we have worked so hard to build,” he said.
Reaffirming Liberia’s long-standing commitment to peaceful coexistence, President Boakai noted the deep cultural and economic ties shared among Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone, stressing that such bonds must be preserved.
The President concluded by calling for unity and vigilance, reminding Liberians that the country’s peace remains a hard-earned achievement that must be protected at all costs.
“Let us remain united and committed to the values that define us as a peaceful nation,” he urged.
The situation along the Liberia–Guinea border is being closely monitored, with authorities expressing confidence that continued dialogue will sustain stability in the region.
