NO ARREST YET: Justice Minister Says Investigation into US$19.2 Million Dollars Drug Seizure Continues

Justice Minister Oswald Tweh has informed members of the House of Representatives that no arrest has been made in connection with the recent seizure of narcotics valued at approximately US$19.2 million Dollars at the Roberts International Airport (RIA).

Appearing before lawmakers on Tuesday, Minister Tweh said investigations into the case remain ongoing, with authorities continuing to invite persons of interest for questioning. He emphasized the sensitive nature of the investigation and cautioned against the premature disclosure of information that could compromise ongoing efforts.

Also appearing before the House was the Officer-in-Charge of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), Fitzgerald Biago, who identified Emmanuel Zeon as the individual investigators believe transported the consignment through the airport. However, Biago disclosed that Zeon has not been located, amid reports suggesting he may have died approximately three years ago.

As lawmakers repeatedly pressed officials for the names of suspects and details of any arrests, Minister Tweh maintained that the matter has been elevated to the National Security Council. He argued that neither he nor other security officials could publicly disclose sensitive or classified information during an open hearing, a position that prompted Speaker Richard Koon to move proceedings into executive session.

Following deliberations involving the LDEA, the Liberia Airport Authority (LAA), the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA), and the Ministry of Justice, the House of Representatives instructed the Justice Minister to return before plenary on June 30 2025 with an update on the progress of the investigation.

Lawmakers noted that Liberians are eagerly awaiting answers regarding those responsible for the attempted shipment and the circumstances surrounding one of the country’s largest reported drug seizures.
