Nimba Elders Threaten Peaceful Protest, Urge Unity Amid Growing Political Tensions

FREEMAN TOWN, Nimba County – Traditional elders in Nimba County have threatened to organize a peaceful protest if ongoing political disagreements affecting the county are not addressed, following a meeting with Nimba County Senator Samuel G. Kogar in Freeman Town.

During the meeting, the elders of Gbi-Doru expressed concern over what they described as increasing political divisions within the county. They accused Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung of contributing to those divisions instead of fostering reconciliation and unity among Nimba’s people.

According to the elders, the Vice President should return to Nimba County to engage directly with citizens and traditional leaders rather than inviting them to Monrovia for discussions. They argued that resolving the county’s political challenges requires dialogue at the local level.

The traditional leaders also voiced dissatisfaction over what they described as the Vice President’s treatment of Nimba citizens and his absence from what they considered an important meeting in the county. They warned that if the current situation remains unresolved, they will proceed with a peaceful public demonstration to draw attention to their concerns.

Speaking during the gathering, the Traditional Head of Gbi-Doru alleged that a local Zoe, identified as Gbaydea, attempted to discourage community leaders from attending Senator Kogar’s meeting by warning that they could lose their jobs if they participated. The allegation has not been independently verified, and there has been no immediate response from the individuals named.

The meeting highlighted growing political tensions in Nimba County, with traditional leaders emphasizing the need for unity, dialogue, and accountability among the county’s political leadership. They called on all stakeholders to place the interests of the county above political differences and work together to preserve peace and stability.
