‎House Passes Resolution to Create 16 New Electoral Districts

‎By: Joseph K. Sallie

‎‎The House of Representatives on Tuesday July 14, 2026 passed a resolution establishing a new population threshold to create 16 additional electoral seats across Liberia. If concurred with by the Liberian Senate, the number of seats in the House of Representatives will increase from 73 to 89.

‎‎The resolution directs the National Elections Commission (NEC) to use the 2022 National Population and Housing Census to create the new seats based on a population-tier system.

‎‎Counties with populations of 0–130,000 will receive no new seat; 130,001–310,000 will receive one new seat; 310,001–700,000 will receive two new seats; and counties with more than 700,000 people will receive three new seats.
