Commercial Court Issues Contempt Writ Against Finance Minister, Deputies
Monrovia, June 11, 2026 — The Chief Judge of the Commercial Court, Judge Eva Mappy-Morgan, has issued a writ of contempt against Finance Minister and his deputies in connection with a petition seeking to compel arbitration.
According to our Judicial Correspondent, the writ was issued on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, following the alleged failure of the Ministry of Finance officials to appear before the Commercial Court on June 4 and June 5 as ordered by the court.
Judge Mappy-Morgan’s writ directs the Finance Minister and his deputies to appear before the Commercial Court on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. to show cause why they should not be held in contempt of court in accordance with the law.
Sources within the court indicated that the contempt proceedings stem from an ongoing petition to compel arbitration, a matter currently before the Commercial Court.
The court is reportedly seeking an explanation for the officials’ absence during the previous hearings, which the petitioners contend constituted a disregard for the court’s authority.
Legal observers note that failure to comply with the writ and appear before the court as ordered could expose the officials to sanctions, including possible arrest and other penalties prescribed under Liberian law.
