CLLR. CHARLYNE M. BRUMSKINE APPOINTED TO ECOWAS COMMUNITY COURT OF JUSTICE, BRINGING WORLD-CLASS LEGAL EXPERTISE TO THE REGIONAL BENCH

Liberia has once again demonstrated its growing influence within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) with the appointment of Cllr. Charlyne M. Brumskine as a Judge of the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice, where she will serve from 2026 to 2030.
Her appointment is a testament to her distinguished legal career, unwavering commitment to justice, and decades of service in Liberia and across the international community.
With more than 23 years of legal experience spanning multiple international jurisdictions, Cllr. Brumskine is widely recognized as one of Liberia’s most accomplished legal minds. She earned her Juris Doctor (JD) from Howard University School of Law in Washington, D.C., and is pursuing a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in International Corporate and Commercial Law at King’s College London.
She also achieved the distinction of being the Valedictorian of the Liberia Supreme Court Bar Examination, recording the highest score nationwide, and is admitted to practice law in Liberia, New York State, and the District of Columbia.
Throughout her career, Cllr. Brumskine has built an impressive record in international law, human rights, corporate and commercial law, treaty interpretation, public policy, governance, and cross-border legal disputes.
She has served as a member of Liberia’s World Trade Organization (WTO) Accession Negotiation Team, contributed to the country’s international trade negotiations, and led the drafting of Liberia’s National Action Plan against Human Trafficking for the Ministry of Justice.
Her international experience also includes serving as a Civil and Human Rights Litigator in New York City and later as a Policy Specialist with the United States Department of Health and Human Services, where she became a leading expert on human trafficking, helping to shape federal child welfare regulations and legislative policy.
Beyond government service, Cllr. Brumskine has remained committed to legal education. She currently serves as an Associate Professor at both the Liberia School of Law and the Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law at the University of Liberia, where she has mentored and trained the next generation of Liberian lawyers.
She is also an Amujae Leadership Initiative Fellow of the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Presidential Center for Women and Development and has represented Liberia on prestigious international platforms, including the University of Oxford and the Global
Progress Action Summit in London.
Cllr. Brumskine’s appointment to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice reflects her sustained dedication to human rights, justice, democratic governance, and regional integration.
Her wealth of experience and exceptional legal credentials position her to make meaningful contributions to the Court’s mandate of promoting justice, interpreting Community law, and strengthening the rule of law across West Africa.
