CDC’s 22nd Anniversary Celebration in Zwedru Hits Venue Snag

ZWEDRU, Grand Gedeh County — The Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) faces uncertainty over its planned 22nd Anniversary and Militant Day celebration in Zwedru after city authorities said the party did not secure approval for its proposed venue near Tubman Palace.

Zwedru City Mayor Rita Kai Massaquoi disclosed Sunday that CDC officials failed to follow municipal procedures required for using public event grounds. According to the mayor, party representatives began clearing the site without prior authorization from the city government.

Mayor Massaquoi clarified that informing city officials about an event does not equate to permission to use public property. She noted that formal application, review, and approval are mandatory before any organization can access or modify city-owned spaces for gatherings.

The disclosure leaves the CDC’s anniversary plans in limbo as the event date approaches. It remains unclear whether party officials will complete the required permitting process for the Tubman Palace area or relocate the celebration to an alternative venue.

City officials say they remain open to engagement with the CDC once proper procedures are followed. Party leaders have not yet issued a public response on how they intend to proceed with the milestone event.
