BOAKAI HEADS TO GHANA FOR HISTORIC UN REPARATIONS CONFERENCE, TO DELIVER KEYNOTE ADDRESS

MONROVIA, Liberia – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has departed Liberia for Accra, Ghana, where he is expected to play a prominent role in a high-level international conference focused on reparatory justice for the transatlantic slave trade.
The two-day consultative conference, convened by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, follows the adoption of United Nations Resolution A/RES/80/250 on March 25, 2026. The resolution recognizes the transatlantic slave trade and the enslavement of Africans as among the gravest crimes against humanity and calls for continued international engagement on reparatory justice.
According to the Executive Mansion, President Boakai will serve as a Special Guest at the gathering and deliver the keynote address during the opening ceremony. He has also been invited to join the newly established Global Advisory Panel on Reparatory Justice, a high-level body expected to guide efforts aimed at implementing the UN resolution and advancing discussions on historical accountability and restorative justice.
The conference is expected to bring together African and Caribbean leaders, foreign ministers, reparations experts, legal scholars, civil society organizations, representatives of the African Union, CARICOM, CELAC, and various United Nations agencies. Liberian officials say President Boakai’s participation reflects Liberia’s historical connection to the African diaspora and its commitment to issues of justice, reconciliation, and international cooperation.
President Boakai is accompanied by Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, National Security Advisor Cllr. Samuel Kofi Woods, Director-General of the Cabinet Nathaniel Kwabo, and Maritime Commissioner Neto Zaza Lighe. While the President is abroad, Justice Minister and Attorney General Cllr. Natu Oswald Tweh Sr. will chair Cabinet meetings in consultation with Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung.
