As a prominent citizen and businessman of District One, I, William F. Kotee Jr., extend my sincere appreciation to the Government of Liberia for dispatching officers from the Liberia Immigration Service (LIS) and the Ministry of Labor to MNG Gold Liberia’s David Dean’s Town mining site following growing concerns regarding the company’s alleged employment practices.
As we have observed over the past several months, this intervention comes after reports accused the company of hiring Turkish nationals as drivers instead of qualified Liberians, while also assigning security personnel to driving roles.
On April 23, 2026, the Liberia Immigration Service commenced an investigation into the number of Turkish nationals currently working at the site, as LIS records reportedly indicate that only a limited number of Turkish nationals were officially brought into the country by MNG Gold Liberia.
However, sources claim the company may have more than 40 Turkish nationals at the mining site, with some allegedly entering Liberia without completing the proper immigration procedures.
At the same time, officials of the Ministry of Labor are reportedly examining job placements for both Liberian and Turkish workers, including salary structures and overall employment conditions.
In light of this, we are pleased to commend the Government of Liberia, especially the Liberia Immigration Service and the Ministry of Labor, for their timely intervention at MNG Gold Liberia. This action demonstrates that the concerns of affected community members will be addressed by the relevant authorities.
We also wish to thank the people of District One for handling these issues responsibly and urge them to continue engaging in a peaceful and civil manner, as has been observed.
In conclusion, let us all remain calm and respectful, including employees of MNG Gold Liberia and all citizens of Bong County, as we await the findings of these institutions.
