‘’It was quite interesting to see how some government supporters hyped up what was clearly a political witch hunt against one of Liberia’s foremost intellectuals, former Finance Minister Samuel Tweah. And even as the court has struck down this vendetta, sore losers posing as experts still seem hell-bent on devising different machinations to silence critical voices.

The strategy has been simple: create sufficient headline-grabbing distractions from the colossal failures we see daily. There’s still no reversal of harmonization. Instead, new bourgeois roam government offices dishing out threats to civil servants. The electricity sector is increasingly crippling, and a rising cost of living along with an unemployment crisis has made life very difficult for ordinary people.

There are no new large-scale infrastructure projects, almost three years in. All we hear are big talks and big promises. The capital city continues to languish in filth while new complexes go up in the president’s compound. Meanwhile, the nouveau riche have escalated their party culture, caring very little about the lofty promises they made.

But the Liberian people now fully understand that governing cannot persist on the usual lies. The vindication of Minister Samuel Tweah sent a shockwave through the governing political ecosystem. The plan had been to keep him from joining the ranks of an increasingly stronger CDC. That plot failed, and it has exposed the lies and weaknesses of the ruling elites.

Since the ruling, the CDC has continued to receive expressions of support from across the political aisle, including from ruling party supporters. They recognize the symbolism of the victory and how it is a microcosm of a much broader prognosis of the situation we find ourselves in.
